The end

This was almost the last picture in the album, though certainly not the last chronologically. It looks like she is way out in a field, but the shadows show there is a building, likely the house, right there.

Jean MacDonald, 1938, Nova Scotia.
I suspect she is in the family picture with Aunt Tess of Antigonish, so a cousin of Betty's.

Swimsuit or underwear?

Betty and Evelyn Strang, 1936

Betty and a friend hanging around.

We saw Evelyn in her wedding dress a while back. This picture is from 1936 when she was a teenager.

And who is the younger sibling peeking through the window?

More Joe

Joe and his bike are back.

"This was taken the Sunday after Good Friday at the front of our place. As you notice the bike is actually clean! Just newly painted. Joe"

And my mom added his surname and the date.

Mabel gets married

Was Mabel the first of the friends to get married? Did she get married in England?

Was it usual to get postcards made of your wedding picture?

"The 'Blushing Bride' walking up Church Path."
Mabel Walker Sayer.

Joe again

We saw Joe on his bike a while ago. Here he is in the winter time. It's another picture that was handled a lot.

Betty's writing on the back; no long note from him this time.

Mabel goes to England

So, Mabel went to England around 1939. She was something like 19. She sent her friend this picture, which was clearly pinned on the wall as well as carried around.

Mabel Walker. Sent from England,1939.

I'd love to know more about this.

Family maid

My grandmother had seven children, and apparently also a maid. In this picture she is dressed for some special occasion.

Benoit on top

This is the content we've all been waiting for, right?

I have no idea who Eugene Benoit is.

Aunt Tess

I never met my mom's Aunt Tess, but I knew she was Aunt Tess from Antigonish, which was highly amusing to me as a kid. She was, I believe, my grandfather's sister.

Aunt Tess, Uncle Mac (H.M. MacDonald) and family 1938.

A fun day at the beach.

A big gang in 1941

A class? A party of some sort? Were they joining the war effort?

No Roys here, but a couple of Betty's friends.

I just had to get rid of that photographer's shadow!

Muriel

This is Muriel and her husband, Johnny.

Muriel was Betty's lifelong friend. I am not sure I ever met her, but I certainly heard of her.

Norman and Evelyn

I don't know how these two fit in, but the woman could be Evelyn Strang, maybe.

It says: "Here we are. The dress is my wedding dress. This is a sample of our own developing and printing."

Betty then added, "Norman + Evelyn Kester."

I thought she had crazy hair, but it is just a slightly crazy hat!

Bunny and family

Luckily both Denise and Bev chimed in on this one. I think that I am the little one my mom is holding, so my first-hand recollections are nil. Bunny's family was visiting from Manitoba, so it was an event out of the ordinary for them.

This is Bunny, Nell, Denise, me and Mom in the back row; Karen, John and Bev in the front. Denise thought maybe their older brother George was the cameraman, as my dad had to go to work that day. Beverly remembered that they went to see Grampa Roy who was not well; he died in 1964, I believe. Maybe baby Cedar was asleep, not yet born, crying off-screen, who knows!

Betty, 1967

Another jump forward from our usual pictures. This is from August 1967. Note Betty's jaunty pant-suit.

Visiting a friend... Mabel

Hard to say...

Most of the Roys

I wonder where this was taken. It could be on the occasion of Anne's wedding in Saskatoon, although here they are dressed for a walk!

Funny annotation: everyone but Don 1980
                                                    + Pat

So it's Mary Jean, Douglas, Inez, Bunny, Betty, Frank.

Sydney, age 4

Here's a cute little Sydney.

At one point, Diane wrote the date, March 1947. Then she wrote the name, Syd. Rather later my dad wrote her whole name in his somewhat shaky writing.

She looks like she's got places to go and people to see.
